NATIONAL CHAMPIONS MEN - PART 3: SOUTH WEST EUROPE
Only 25 national leagues in Europe will provide teams for the 2013/14 VELUX EHF Champions League season. In five parts, ehfCL.com shine the spotlight on each of the teams who qualified for the next edition of Europe's top flight and their race for the ticket in their respective national competitions.
The third part of the series is dedicated to teams from south-west Europe - Portugal, Spain, France and Switzerland.
PORTUGAL (FC Porto Vitalis)
FC Porto Vitalis will take part in their fourth consecutive VELUX EHF Champions League Qualification Tournament, after securing the Portuguese title ahead of SL Benfica.
Porto finished the first phase of the season just one point ahead of their rivals, after losing just one of their 22 league games. Despite two defeats, the gap was two points in the final phase and FC Porto Vitalis head to another qualifying tournament, hoping to do better than their third place finish last season.
SPAIN (FC Barcelona Intersport)
Barca claimed a clean sweep at domestic level, including their record 20th Spanish Asobal league title ahead of perennial rivals Atlético Madrid. They can look forward to another season among Europe’s elite and they will be hoping to go one step further than their defeat in last season’s final to HSV Hamburg
The Catalans secured the title with three rounds to spare; their 30:25 win over Ademar Leon was victory number 27 from 27 games and was enough to claim the title. Barcelona eventually lost their penultimate game against Naturhouse La Rioja, who took the third spot in the VELUX EHF Champions League behind Madrid.
FRANCE (Paris Saint Germain Handball)
A star-studded Paris Saint Germain team powered their way through the French league to win their first title and sent a warning out to their European rivals for next season.
Paris were a force to be reckoned with, after taking first place in the league after the third game, they never gave their position away with 17 wins from their first 17 games. The overall record stood at 24 wins from 26, with just one defeat to Nantes and a draw against Montpellier to their name.
They won the league by an impressive 10 points ahead of Dunkerque, who qualify for the VELUX EHF Champions League Group Phase for the first time, while third place Montpellier were handed a chance at reaching the Group Phase when they were awarded a place in the wild card qualification tournament.
SWITZERLAND (Wacker Thun)
Wacker Thun lead the league after the main round ahead of Pfadi Winterthur by one point and topped the winners stage, again by one point ahead of Winterthur and Kadetten Schaffhausen.
Thun won their semi-final series in the play-offs against St.Gallen by three games to nil. Defending champions Kadetten Schaffhausen were beaten to the title by Thun with a 35:27 win in the fifth and deciding match in the play-off final, ending a three-year reign for Schaffhausen.
This is the first league title for the club in their 52-year history and they will have a place in the Group Phase of the VELUX EHF Champions League for the first time. Schaffhausen applied for a wild card qualification place, but were unsuccessful and will play in the EHF Cup in the 2013/14 season.
